Speaking ahead of tonight’s meeting of the Governing Council of the ECB and tomorrow’s Eurogroup meeting to discuss Greece, S&D Group president Gianni Pittella said:

“The S&D Group rejects any scenario of a Grexit. The possible domino-effect would have a disruptive impact on the whole of Europe. All parties engaged in this process share a common responsibility to find a comprehensive compromise for European citizens; a political agreement capable of ensuring the integrity of the Eurozone and to saving Europe.

“We must do whatever it takes to find this agreement in the coming days.

“The Greek government must come forward with concrete reform proposals which must be applied. The integrity of the Eurozone also depends on the willingness of Tsipras’ government to commit to its obligations.

“We also urge all the international creditors, and in particular the IMF, to show flexibility in their demands and stick to their previous commitments, in particular that on debt relief taken in November 2012. It is evident that the current level of Greek public debt is unsustainable.

“Nobody is allowed to play with fire. It is the future of Europe that is here at stake.”
